Can Zeolite Help My Tank?

Zeolite readily adsorbs ammonia, thus is able to deal with ammonia spikes during cycling etc*, but it is important to note that it does not work forever, becoming saturated within about a month., and will not work after its “full”. If you have really high ammonia problems, 2 weeks is likely to be the time to replace.

*Only use during cycling to solve ammonia spikes and only as long as needed to bring the levels down. Then Remove.

How to use

Typically in a media bag in the filter between the Mechanical Media/Sponges and the Biomedia.

Do’s & Don’ts:

DON’T Add salt to a freshwater aquarium when using Zeolite as it may release the ammonia it has adsorbed, potentially causing spikes.

DON’T Leave the Zeolite in the aquarium after the ammonia levels have dropped, and never for more than 4 weeks, remove after 2-3 is better.

DO Test for Ammonia regularly and replace as needed. Once you have no presence remove all the zeolite from the aquarium.

DO Recharge by simply placing used Zeolite on a baking tray and bake at 180 degrees C for about 45 minutes to recharge. Use again as before but only do this 2 or 3 times maximum then discard.
